Shark Diving, Florida

It is possible to see a lot of different shark species on a Florida shark dive. You can even dive with Tiger Sharks in Tampa Bay (see below).

But if you want to try Great White Shark cage diving, Florida is probably not the destination. Instead you should go to California.

Even though Great White Sharks cage diving in Florida is not an option, you should certainly bring your scuba diving equipment, because shark scuba diving is more than just the Great White Shark.

Florida can also be departure point for some great shark scuba diving near Bahamas, just about 50 miles (80 kilometres) off the Florida coast.

Shark Diving, Key Largo

Some of the best shark diving, snorkeling and swimming in Florida is located near the first of the Florida Keys, Key Largo.

On a Key Largo dive, you can see Blacktip Reef Sharks, Bonnethead Sharks, Bull Sharks, Carribbean Reef Sharks, Great Hammerhead Sharks and Scallopped Hammerhead Sharks.

Shark Diving, Tampa Bay

Another option for shark diving in Florida is a scuba dive with the Sharks at The Florida Aquarium in Tampa Bay.

The “dive site” is called Shark Bay and is a 93,000-gallon saltwater exhibit home to shark species and sea turtles from around the world. The water is a constant 76 degrees with crystal clear visibility and no current or surge. Perfect diving conditions.

Here you can dive with shark species from around the world: including Sand Tiger Sharks, Zebra Sharks, Nurse Sharks and Blacktip Reef Sharks.

The program is approximately 90-minutes and includes an educational presentation about sharks and a 30-minute dive in the Shark Bay exhibit.

You will exit the shark cage and position yourself on the bottom of the exhibit in front of the exhibit window. Family and friends can view your dive during all phases.

The dive at The Florida Aquarium is very safe. You are escorted by two scuba dive masters in the tank, and they are trained to supervise recreational diving activities by world wide recognized scuba training agencies.

You must be a certified scuba diver to take a shark dive at The Florida Aquarium, so do not forget your scuba diving certification card.

The price is $150 including scuba dive gear (except face mask), souvenir shark dive hat, admission and one photography of the dive.

This is a very popular dive, so it should be booked well in advance – and at least eight days before the dive.

So whatever you choose – a tank dive in Tampa Bay or an ocean scuba dive in Key Largo, you will have a great shark dive. Florida is a great destination for shark diving.
